Gwent League success!

A great day was had by the young athletes from North Somerset AC at the final fixture of the prestigious Gwent Cross Country League. Glorious sunshine greeted the squad after their long trek to Swansea, where the athletes enjoyed dry conditions underfoot on an undulating Singleton Park course. There were many series Team and individual prizes hanging in the balance as the races began.

First off were the U11 girls who had a slender lead over Swansea AC in the team standings leading into the final race. The quartet of Amelia H (8th), Heidi N (14th), Florrie J (18th) and Eva W 48th) all ran strongly and came home as team Champions for the season, a great achievement. Amelia also finished 8th in the overall standings

The U11 Boys have been leading the series all season and didn’t disappoint on the day, Oscar W (2nd), Oliver F (3rd), Edward S (5th), Oliver S (9th) and Arthur A (10th) all finishing inside the top ten on the day. This gave the team the inevitable and well deserved Team Gold. What is even more incredible is that the B Team led home by Sam B (12th), James H (23rd), Jeremy C (36th) and George B (37th) also won Team Bronze for the series. This shows the huge strength in depth and quality that this age group possess. From an individual perspective the club again dominated the U11 age group,

In the U13 age group the boys, who have medalled as a team in every event they have competed in this season, did not disappoint. The brilliant squad of Joseph F (2nd), Leo D (7th), Felix A (9th), James B (11th), backed up by the upcoming first year athlete Euan M (27th) won the team Gold for the season with Joseph F winning the individual series gold. Leo D 7th and Felix A 9th

Evie B was the sole u13 girl runner, finishing well and ensuring an 11th place overall team finish for the season

The U15 Boys have had a team battle with their rivals Carmarthen all season and went into the last fixture with all to play for. Buoyed by the sooner than expected return of Ben C (3rd on the day) there were some great performances with Patrick H having the run of his life in 11thplace. But despite the 4 scorers finishing in the top 13 places they had to settle for Team Silver. There were well deserved individual series honours for Ben C ( 3rd) and Herbie C ( 5th).

The u15 girls team continue to demonstrate improvement, and an excellent 6th place finish for the season their reward. Pippa H (18th), Natasha B (29th) finishes on the day

The u17 men finishing in 7th place overall, with Stan H (12th), Kyle B (16th), Ben M (17th) bringing the team home strongly

The U20 men team started the day 2nd in the team standings, but managed to overhaul the deficit to Cardiff on the last day with outstanding performances by Will Cheek 2nd, Callum Day 4thand Alex Collins 6th.   Will Cheek’s brilliant run on the final day moved him up the individual series rankings to give him the silver medal.

In the Senior Men’s race Joe Gentry ran a brilliant race to finish 6th of the 250 competitors on the 9k course. For his efforts, he picked up the bronze medal in the U23 series category, a deserving reward for his consistent running all season.  Nico Saillard also had a great run to finish 23rd and 3rd Vet 45, with coach Russ Forsbrook finishing a very creditable 60th.

All in all, a superb days racing ended what has been the clubs most successful winter season on record. Endurance Coaches Julian Emery and Russ Forsbrook can take great credit for the superb job they have done with the athletes, and will no doubt be very proud of the athletes achievements throughout…

Special mention for Chris Millard, as he continues to unearth and develop talented young athletes, without which we would not have achieved such success.
