An astonishing day at a beautiful Brecon, described by Coaches Julian Emery and Russ Forsbrook as ‘the best ever cross-country day for NSAC” saw amazing results across all age ranges and categories at the prestigious Gwent Cross-Country League. Three winners on the day (Joseph F u13 boys, Sam H u17 men and Ellie W senior women) and 3 team wins (u11 boys, u13 boys and u15 boys) as well as 16 top-10 individual finishes and 3 further top 3 team finishes has certainly opened eyes to the intent of this strong North Somerset squad for the winter. With over 100 runners from across South Wales and the West in most races, the events were extremely competitive.

First up was the u11 boys. A hard fought battle at the front saw Ollie F just miss out on the win as he was outsprinted by his rival from Neath. He was, however followed home by Oscar W (3rd), Edward S (4th) and Joel W (10th) to secure a comfortable team win. The ‘B’ team also finishing 3rd team, and the ‘C’ team 15th.

Next race saw the u11 girls. Despite missing several very good runners, a 2nd place team finish on the day suggests the team could also go onto win this category also as the season unfolds. Led by Amelia H in 12th, the team consisted of Eva W (27th), April H (36th) and Heidi N (38th)

The under-13 boys were arguably the pick of the bunch with their victory. Joseph F goes from strength to strength, winning the race comfortably. He was followed home by Leo D (6th), Felix A (9th) and James B (10th). The ‘B’ team were 17th

Heidi M ran a strong race to finish 7th overall. The team ending up in 11th position, but will climb toward the medals as the season progresses

The under-15 boys may contest with the younger boys as to who was the most impressive on the day. Ben C ran a storming race, missing out on first place to the Westbury Harriers athlete by the thickness of a vest. Both 1st and 2nd were given the same time, emphasising what a battle it had been. Ben was supported by Herbie (3rd), Seb (8th) and Elliott (12th). The ‘b’ team finished 4th on the day. The ‘C’ team finished 9th and the ‘D’ team 20th!

Another positive result for the u-15 girls. 7th overall gives them the opportunity of moving towards the medals. Mia D the pick of the bunch in 22nd place, ably supported by Pippa H (36th), Tasha B (38th) and Izzy T (39th)

The under-17 mens’ race saw Sam H victorious. Another good run from the 800m specialist shows how well he has developed under Coach Julian Emery. The team finishing 7th on the day.

The under-17 womens’ race saw the team finish 17th

The under-20 men amazingly finished 2nd overall on the day with Jamie VDV in 3rd, Will C in 6th, Callum D in 11th and Max D in 14th.

In the senior womens’ race, Ellie W showed her class by running away from the field for another impressive win. Ellie has been with NSAC for around 12 years, winning many Cross-country events. Some big races await…
