JANUARY 12TH 2016 – OFFICIAL LAUNCH

Today is the formal launch date for the 2016  ’24 hour WSM Grand Pier Relay’, our fourth running. For anyone who is new to NSAC/NSAA, we ran one in 2011 to raise money towards the facility (Phase 1 was completed at Clevedon School last summer). It proved so popular we returned in 2012, and again in 2014. Rather than organise lots of smaller fundraising events, we have decided to organise this ‘unique’ event every second year!
I have been in athletics for 25 years, and it is the best thing I have been involved in. All details are attached. Any queries, please speak to me or email me. Only too happy to fill in any gaps/concerns you may have to enable us to get as many athletes/families on the Pier as possible. As the weeks go by we will drip feed more info (hopefully some GB athletes will attend, television etc), but for now all you need to do is;1 – Decide you want to do it (why wouldn’t you?!)
2 – Speak to friends at NSAC/NSAA to organise a team. Any numbers you wish. If you can’t find anyone who wishes to attend, then let me know and we can sort it!3 – Agree the time you would like to attend – An hour, or more if you wish!
4 – Once sorted, please email me with this information. This will enable me to piece the jigsaw together, and add your name to the official t-shirts – By 21st February
5 – Raise as much money as possible! £10 is minimum per athlete, £30 gets you the event t-shirt with all competitors names on etc.
* Last time we had over 220 athletes take part over the 24 hours, would be great to get to 300. Only NSAC & NSAA Athletes please!THIS IS NOT AN ENDURANCE CHALLENGE. YOU CAN WALK, JOG, SKIP, ANYTHING THAT ENSURES YOU ENJOY THE EVENT. WE ARE THE ONLY ONES IN THE WORLD DOING THIS. IT IS UNIQUE!!!

Hope you are all as excited as I am about this!

Regards

NORTH SOMERSET ATHLETIC CLUB/ACADEMY
WSM GRAND PIER RELAY 2016

THE DETAILpierlogo_homeS

North Somerset Athletic Club and Academy will be running the event for the fourth time over the weekend of March 12th/13th 2016. The event starts at 12pm on Saturday and continues until 12pm on Sunday. The aim of the event is;

  1. To keep at least one mock Olympic flame moving for the duration
  2. A great team-building exercise
  3. To raise awareness of Athletics in North Somerset
  4. To raise money towards phase 2 of our Athletics facility in Clevedon, equipment purchase, and athlete bursary

We request that all Athletes try to get involved in this, as the previous three events have proved to be extremely special. It was talked about for months afterwards!

THE THEME

As this year sees the Olympic Games in Rio we have decided to go for a ‘Carnival’ theme. Come dressed in bright colours (yellow, orange, bright green, pink etc). Add face paints if you wish, and headwear. Enjoy getting dressed up!

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Organise a group of friends from within NSAC/NSAA (no guests please, as this is a special event for Members only). Decide on the best time for you to be involved. Email me with the list of names, and your preferred time. If you can’t find anyone else to come with, then just email me your preferred time. There will be 10-12 Athletes minimum each hour, so plenty to work with! We will attempt to spread Athletes evenly throughout the 24 hours, so once we have an hour ‘filled’ (ie 20 per hour) then we will ask others to look at other times. I will update this as we get nearer, letting you know what hours are filled, and which are empty!

THE BIG ONES!

The big hours are the first and last, this is when we will most likely see tv/celebrity support. If you have enjoyed your effort, then you are welcome to come back and join in again, or join us for the last hour to celebrate the success!

ON THE DAY

Arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before your ‘stint’ (allowing for parking etc in WSM). Come to the Registration area and prepare for your effort. This is not a race. No-one is going to be pushing you to do more than you want. Take the flame around as many or as few times as you wish within the time allotted. There will be plenty of adults to escort younger Athletes around, and parents are welcome to get involved in this process also. At the end of the hour, if you wish to stay on, this is not a problem (providing your parents are okay for you to do so!)

MEDIA

We hope to enthuse television, newspapers and radio to look in on us as previous relays We are contacting them now. if anyone has any personal contacts, then please either share with us, or preferably speak to them yourselves! For this to be the massive financial success we need will take huge media interest, so the more contacts we have the better

‘CELEBRITIES’

We are speaking with various people now about attending, and hope to confirm names shortly. Again, if you know someone ‘famous’ then please invite them. The more ‘faces’ we can get involved the more interest we can drum up!

FINANCE

Any help we can get to raise money the better. Do you work for a big Company that may be interested in sponsoring (from just £200 – Webcam logo – viewed by 10,000, Website logo for a year viewed by 1000 etc. Do you know anyone who has an interest in sport and a large bank balance?!!! Athletes have been asked to raise money themselves (minimum £10 to allow them to take part).

INCENTIVES!

  • Any athlete raising £30 will be given an event t-shirt. If you know you have raised/will raise this money, please advise us by Sunday 21st February to enable us to order for you.
  • Any athlete raising £60 will also be presented with a bronze medal in a presentation case at the first available training session after the event.
  • Any athlete raising £90 will also be presented with a silver medal in a presentation case at the first available training session after the event.
  • Any athlete raising £120 will also be presented with a gold medal in a presentation case at the first available training session after the event.
  • Any athlete raising £150 will also be presented with a personally engraved glass trophy at the first available training session after the event, and a mention in the local newspapers.

SCHOOLS

We will email schools with details of the run, and posters. Speak to your teachers if you are planning to run. Ask them to add your name below the poster/add to newsletters etc. Tell them what time you are running and get them to watch you on the webcam!

WEBCAM

We will have a webcam set up for the whole event. We will share the details nearer the time, but you can be seen by ‘the whole world’ on this, so let everyone you know know what you are doing! Visit www.nsac.org and see the last event in 2014

SOCIAL MEDIA

Please share details on social media (facebook/twitter etc). We had a few celebrities interested in our efforts last time, along with over 1000 others. Don’t wait until March, start telling them now. Run a countdown. Make it exciting! See if we can get 10,000 followers between us!

SAFETY

The most important part of the event. There will be a full risk assessment posted on the NSAC& NSAA websites prior to the event, but generally… be sensible! Young Athletes to stay away from the edge, no ‘tomfoolery’ and to respect other Pier users. If we get this right, then we can look forward to another one in a couple of years. Get it wrong, and we are in trouble! Can adults please remain with us for the duration of their children’s run (or be accessible somewhere on the Pier!) As previously stated, you are welcome to join in!

JUST GIVING / TEXT NSAC

We wish to advertise the following details that can make sponsorship a lot easier. Similar to the ‘Text Santa’ campaign on the tv, all anyone has to do to get sponsorship is to… TO BE ADVISED!!!

ATHLETES ARE ENCOURAGED TO DRESS UP! 2014 WAS ‘COMMONWEALTH GAMES’ THEME, SO ATHLETES DRESSED ACCORDINGLY!

NSAA/NSAC 24 HOUR WSM GRAND PIER RELAY 2016
ATHLETE SPONSORSHIP DETAILS

Thanks to previous efforts, Phase 1 of our facility at Clevedon has been completed, and equipment has been purchased for use across the Club and Academy.

We are attempting to raise around £100,000 within the next three years to allow us to proceed with the full build (Phase 2). Our first major event is with the fourth running of the ‘unique’ 24 hour relay on Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier. We are keen to maximise this superb event by raising as much money as physically possible. One of the ways is through the Athletes raising sponsorship themselves. Rather than just leaving you to do it, we would like to offer a series of targets and rewards!

For an Athlete to take part in the event, we would request a payment/ minimum sponsorship of £10.00 be made to North Somerset Athletic Club. All other events charge for entry, and we feel this should be no different, particularly as the proceeds are going towards something that will benefit us all! In addition…

  • Any Athlete raising £30.00 or more will be presented with an ‘event t-shirt’ to commemorate their efforts (money to be raised and handed over prior to receiving this!)
  • An Athlete raising £60.00 will be presented with an engraved bronze medal mounted within a presentation box, as well as the aforementioned t-shirt (money to be raised and handed over prior to receiving this!)
  • An Athlete raising £90.00 will be presented with an engraved silver medal mounted within a presentation box, as well as the aforementioned t-shirt (money to be raised and handed over prior to receiving this!)
  • An Athlete raising £120.00 will be presented with an engraved gold medal mounted within a presentation box, as well as the aforementioned t-shirt (money to be raised and handed over prior to receiving this!)*
  • An Athlete raising £150.00 will be presented with an engraved glass trophy, as well as the aforementioned t-shirt * A special mention will be made within the newspapers/on website etc of this effort (money to be raised and handed over prior to receiving this!)

To give you some idea of numbers, if we can get 250 Athletes involved, and each raises £30.00, then we are looking at a £7,500 event (before Corporate sponsorship etc). We will be raising awareness massively within the next few weeks, which should make it easier for you to speak to family, friends, teachers, work colleagues etc for a couple of pound towards this.

PERSONAL CHALLENGE

An issue that always arises is with setting a personal target. If you are raising money, then ‘running on the Pier’ probably isn’t enough! Why not use the table below to set your own personal target, and advertise this, eg “I am going to run 10 laps of the Pier in my hour slot, and that is 7 kilometres (4.3 miles)” sounds much better!
