Cross Country Teams Raise Bar At Gwent League 3

The clubs strong Cross Country squad had their best collective results of the season on a testing track in atrocious conditions at Park Bryn Bach, Tredegar last weekend.

The U11 girls faced a howling wind and driving rain on the start line, but this didn’t deter bottom age Sophie C who showed grit and determination to finish a superb 6th place in leading her team mates home. Debutant  Eva G finished 31st, with ever-present Bonnie M in 54th and Mia H 87th.

An amazing turnout of sixteen U11 boys braved the conditions with Joel M leading the boys home with a fantastic 4th place. Harry S 23rd, Ben C 24th and young Alex L in 32nd displayed great team running to ensure a probable top 3 finish on the day. Euan M in 41st led the rest of the boys home with Zachary Y 55th, Ben K 61st, Luke C 62nd, Ranolph Y 63rd, Zach C 70th, Harry M 71st, Morgan C 75th, Somerset H 76th, Joe J 81st, William T-J 83rd and Isaac L in 92nd completing the team scores.

The U13 girls secured a great team result with Keira D finishing 2nd, incredibly after losing a shoe in bog like conditions at the very start of her race. Millie R claimed a fantastic 5th place, with Blythe J having a tremendous run for her best finish of the season in 8th place after out-sprinting two girls in the final 50 metres. Debutant Ottilie H had a terrific first race for the club as the A Teams fourth scorer in 43rd place. Harriet B 45th, Lyla B 57th, Hanna W 61st, Emily F 65th with Ellie S in 67th completed the team scores.

Sam H again led the U13 boys with an excellent 13th place and lower age Herbie C having a tremendous run just two places behind in 15th. Another lower age athlete Patrick H again showed his potential with a solid 23rd, followed by Elliot J to complete the A team scores in 28th. Zeki H took a heavy fall in the mud but rallied to finish 36th with debutant Liam M 41st, Kyle B 47th, Joseph S 48th and moving slickly through the field Jacob F took a tenner off his father to secure  a top 50 finish in fine style.

Alice B-M ‘in a top-class field of runners’ scored a fine 12th place finish, with sisters ‘Josephine and Isabel’ having terrific first races for the club in 14th n 15th respectively. Lower age athlete Abigail T is starting to show her potential, and her best finish to date saw her record a superb 23rd place to give the A team their best team score of the season so far.

Mary H in 25th and Holly A in 26th worked superbly together with debutant Isobel G in 32nd.  Poppy B-D returned for her first race after a long injury lay off and should be well satisfied with 35th place. Connie R finished 40th, with Alysha F ploughing her way through the field to record a seasons best 42nd.

Ever improving Will S continues to impress with a superb 5th place in the worsening conditions. A delighted Louie B had his highest placed finish to date to finish 12th, with Ollie C close behind in 19th. Ollie A had a cracking run for his highest Gwent League finish in 23rd as the 4th scorer.

Charles B was another of the boys to run well in the conditions for a solid 28th, whilst newcomer Darwin M will be delighted with 32nd in his first country event. Ben M completed the team scores in 44th.

Arguably the best was left until last with the U17 boys squad showing their great strength in depth. It was a joy to watch Sam G return to form, as he relished the difficult conditions to run his best race for a long while in the combined U17/20 race. Sam loves the combination of mud, hills, wind and rain, and cranking up the pace in the last quarter he eased himself away from the leaders to win the race in fine style. This will no doubt give him a big boost in confidence with Championship races fast approaching.

Bottom age Alfie H continues to impress with successive 7th place Gwent League finishes, whilst Matt H in his first country race of the season finished close behind in 9th after recovering from a fall near the end. Callum S finished 10th overall, which should see him as a top five U20 finisher on the day, whilst Ollie L’s hard fought 19th place should see the U17’s finish top team on the day, at the same time closing the gap on Westbury Harriers and Cardiff AC above them.

Ben H had another good run in 22nd with Will C 31st, Jamie C ‘in his first outing in a long while’ an excellent 35th, Max D 43rd, Theo E 48th, Callum D 49th, Jamie P 55th, Alex C 56th and Flynn P 61st to complete the scores.

Clevedon’s Jo G ran strongly through the boggy conditions for her highest finish to date in 29th before the U17 girls finished the days proceedings in the with Ellie R leading the girls home in 23rd, Ellie M 26th, Maisie S 28th and Vicky P completing the team scores in 33rd.

Head Chris Millard commented “A terrific effort by all to secure the win. We are known for our great team ethos, and this year it has really shown. Athletes performing well at their chosen events, and then pitching in to score points in less familiar ones. Also, many athletes stepping up age groups just to ensure we have well balanced teams. We are looking forward to a strong Cross-Country showing in the winter, and then building on this year’s success”

As always, new members always welcome and we are ESPECIALLY keen to hear from anyone who would like to join our amazing team of volunteers (Coaching, Officiating, help of any sort!) www.nsac.org.uk
