The Avon Schools Cross Country squad had a successful day at the South West Schools Champs last weekend with 6 of the 8 teams securing top three team finishes.
Sam Gentry and Keira Devereux once again ran superbly in the Inter Boys and Minor girls race for silver and bronze respectively. Sam raised the bar in very tough conditions underfoot for a tremendous 2nd place finish, whilst Keira maintained her incredibly consistent run of results throughout the season for a fine 3rd place.
Running for Somerset Schools, Matt Howard finished 18 seconds behind Sam for a fine 5th place in only his 3rd XC race his season.
Callum Smith was another club athlete to excel with a brilliant 7th place as a bottom age athlete in the Senior boys race. It was also great to see Harrison Garland making a rare cross country appearance. 25th place at such a high level was very good result indeed for somebody who doesn’t do cross country! hopefully the penny will now drop, as this talented young athlete can go far in this discipline if he wants to.
Blythe Jones continues to impress in her first XC season and 34th in the Minor girls race was evidence of the progress she’s made. Meg McCrum finished well in the Inter girls race for 47th with Ellie Maule also making the team finishing 59th. Bottom age Ollie Lock was not was not feeling at his best in the heavy conditions and did well to finish 50th in the Inter Boys race.
Congratulations go to Sam, Matt, Callum, Harrison and Meg who will all go on to compete at the prestigious English Schools XC Champs in March.
