2018 Pier Relay – The Details

NORTH SOMERSET AC
24 HOUR PIER RELAY
RISK ASSESSMENT

THE TOP PRIORITY OVER THE WEEKEND IS SAFETY. THIS WILL NOT BE COMPROMISED AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON. A FULL RISK ASSESSMENT HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT, AND THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO/FOR ATHLETES – PLEASE READ FULLY

FLOORING
1A THE PIER FLOORING IS WOODEN BOARDS. IN THE DRY THIS IS IDEAL, AND WE CAN RUN WITHOUT FEAR OF SLIPPING, PROVIDING ATHLETES ARE SENSIBLE
1B IF IT IS RAINING/WET, THE BOARDS WILL BECOME EXTREMELY SLIPPERY. DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF RAIN, WE WILL RECOMMEND THE ATHLETES EITHER SLOW DOWN, OR WALK. NO SPRINTING AT ANY TIME. ATHLETES TO RUN SENSIBLY, AND TO REMAIN IN CONTROL TO MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS NECESSARY WHILST MOVING
1C IF THE FLOORING IS ICY, THEN WE WILL STAY WITHIN THE COVERED CENTRAL ‘SPINE’ RUNNING ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE PIER

RAILINGS AND OBSTACLES
2A ATHLETES MUST STAY AWAY FROM RAILINGS AT ALL TIMES. NO ATHLETE TO BE WITHIN SIX FEET OF THE RAILINGS AT ANY POINT FOR ANY REASON. THIS IS THE AREA OF MOST CONCERN, AND WE WILL REMOVE ANY ATHLETE PUTTING THEMSELVES OR OTHERS IN DANGER AROUND THIS AREA
2B THERE ARE A NUMBER OF IMMOVEABLE OBSTACLES (TABLES, CHAIRS, CHILDRENS RIDES ETC). ATHLETES TO AVOID THESE, AND PLAN AHEAD TO AVOID COLLISIONS

WEATHER
3A IF THE WEATHER IS WET, THEN WE WILL BE BASED WITHIN THE COVERED CENTRAL ‘SPINE’ RUNNING ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE PIER. RUNNING RECOMMENDATIONS COVERED IN 1B
3B IF THE WEATHER IS ICY/SNOWY, THEN WE WILL STAY WITHIN THE COVERED CENTRAL ‘SPINE’ RUNNING ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE PIER. RUNNING RECOMMENDATIONS COVERED IN 1C
3C IF WEATHER IS WINDY, WE WILL BE BASED UNDER COVER WITHIN THE COVERED CENTRAL ‘SPINE’ RUNNING ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE PIER. IF WIND IS EXTREME, THEN ALL RUNNING WILL TAKE PLACE IN THIS AREA. ATHLETES TO STAY WELL AWAY FROM THE EDGE OF THE PIER

LIGHTING
4A LIGHTING ON THE END OF THE PIER IS MINIMAL, THEREFORE CAUTION MUST BE TAKEN BY EVERYONE THAT IS RUNNING AFTER DARK. RUN SLOWLY, AND CONCENTRATE ON FOOTING

FOOTWEAR AND CLOTHING
5A ATHLETES MUST BE WEARING SUITABLE FOOTWEAR (TRAINERS). ANYONE WEARING INAPPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RUN (OR ASKED TO WALK ONLY)
5B IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT ATHLETES TO WEAR PLENTY OF LAYERS, AND TO BRING HAT AND GLOVES. PIER VAN BE DECEPTIVELY WINDY AND COLD

OTHER USERS
6A THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF USERS ON THE PIER DURING OUR TIME THERE (MAYBE AS MANY AS 25,000 OVER THE 24 HOURS). WE NEED TO BE RESPECTFUL TO THEM, AND REMEMBER THAT WE ARE WORKING AROUND THEM, AND NOT VICE VERSA. NO SPRINTING, AND ATHLETES TO REMAIN IN CONTROL THROUGHOUT. YOUNG CHILDREN CAN BE ERRATIC IN THEIR MOVEMENTS, AND UNAWARE OF OTHER PEOPLE, SO IT IS CRUCIAL ATHLETES ‘PLAN AHEAD’ WHEN THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE AROUND (ESPECIALLY YOUNGSTERS). IF IT IS VERY BUSY, THEN BE PREPARED TO WALK FOR A BIT.DO NOT JUMP ON BENCHES ETC TO OVERTAKE. ANY PROBLEMS WITH OTHER USERS, PLEASE REPORT BACK TO REGISTRATION ASAP SO WE CAN RESOLVE QUICKLY

GENERALLY
7A ENJOY. HAVE A GREAT TIME, BUT BE SENSIBLE. IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY PROBLEMS OF ANY SORT AT ANY TIME, PLEASE REPORT BACK TO US AT REGISTRATION ASAP SO WE CAN RESOLVE AND/OR MAKE AMENDMENTS TO THE EVENT

THE DETAILS

North Somerset Athletic Club and Academy will be running the event for the fifth time over the weekend of March 10th/11th 2018. The event starts at 12noon on Saturday and continues until 12noon on Sunday. The aim of the event is:

  1. To keep at least one mock Olympic flame moving for the duration
  2. A great team-building exercise
  3. To raise awareness of Athletics in North Somerset
  4. To raise money towards phase 2 of our Athletics facility in Clevedon, and equipment purchase – PLUS MINIMUM 25% DONATION TO CHILDRENS HOSPICE SOUTH WEST.

We suggest that all Athletes try to get involved in this, as the previous four events have proved to be extremely special. It was talked about for months afterwards!

THE THEME

As this year sees the Commonwealth Games from The Gold Coast in Australia (April 8th – 15th) we have decided to go for a ‘Commonwealth’ Theme. Come dressed supporting your favourite Commonwealth Country (England, Scotland, Wales, Kenya, Jamaica, Australia, Canada…) Add face paints if you wish. The more colourful the better…

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Organise a group of friends from within NSAA/NSAC (no guests please, as this is a special event for Members only). Decide on the best time for you to be involved. Email me at chrisbtg@blueyonder.co.uk with the list of names and your preferred time (by Friday 14th February, if you want your name on the t-shirt!). If you can’t find anyone else to come with, then just email me your preferred time. There will be 10-12 Athletes minimum each hour, so plenty to work with! We will attempt to spread Athletes evenly throughout the 24 hours, so once we have an hour ‘filled’ (ie 20 per hour) then we will ask others to look at other times. I will update this as we get nearer, letting you know what hours are filled, and which are empty!

THIS IS NOT AN ENDURANCE ACTIVITY. IT IS A FUN EVENT WHERE YOU CAN DO AS LITTLE OR AS MUCH AS YOU WISH, DEPENDANT UPON YOUR PARENTS’ WISHES. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RUN, YOU CAN WALK, SKIP, MOONWALK (!) ANYTHING!!!

CAN I DO THE WHOLE 24 HOURS? YES, providing you are 14-years-old, have parents’ permission, and understand the nature of the event (risks etc).

THE BIG ONES!

The big hours are the first and last, this is when we will most likely see tv/celebrity support. If you have enjoyed your effort, then you are welcome to come back and join in again, or join us for the last hour to celebrate the success!

ON THE DAY

Arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before your ‘stint’ (allowing for parking etc in WSM). Come to the Registration area and prepare for your effort. This is not a race. No-one is going to be pushing you to do more than you want. Take the flame around as many or as few times as you wish within the time allotted. There will be plenty of adults to escort younger Athletes around, and parents are welcome to get involved in this process also (parents, bring your trainers! At the end of the hour, if you wish to stay on, this is not a problem (providing your parents are okay for you to do so!)

MEDIA

We hope to enthuse television, newspapers and radio to look in on us as previous relays. We are contacting them now. if anyone has any personal contacts, then please either share with us, or preferably speak to them yourselves! For this to be the massive success it deserves to be we need will take huge media interest, so the more contacts we have the better

‘CELEBRITIES’

We are speaking with various people now about attending, and hope to confirm names shortly. Again, if you know someone ‘famous’ then please invite them. The more ‘faces’ we can get involved the more interest we can drum up!

FUNDRAISING

Any help we can get to raise money, the better. Do you work for a big company that maybe interested in sponsoring? Over 10,000 people walk the Pier over a weekend at this time of year, plus tv, newspaper reports, website etc

SCHOOLS

We will email schools with details of the run, and posters. Speak to your teachers if you are planning to run. Ask them to add your name below the poster/add to newsletters etc.

 SOCIAL MEDIA

Please share details on social media (facebook/twitter etc). We had a few celebrities interested in our efforts last time, along with over 1000 others. Don’t wait until March, start telling them now. Run a countdown. Make it exciting! See if we can get 10,000 followers between us!

SAFETY

The most important part of the event. There will be a full risk assessment posted on the NSAC & NSAA websites prior to the event, but generally… be sensible! Young Athletes to stay away from the edge, no ‘tomfoolery’ and to respect other Pier users. If we get this right, then we can look forward to another one in a couple of years. Get it wrong, and we are in trouble! Can adults please remain with us for the duration of their children’s run (or be accessible somewhere on the Pier with phone on, and mobile number left at sign-in area!) As previously stated, you are welcome to join in!
